Perhaps someone who is an expert has noticed this, but I would argue the current US/Chinese trade relationship is eerily similar to the Am. Colonies/British Empire trade relationship.
Much like Colonial times, we export raw materials and import manufactured finished goods. This is not sustainable for the long-term, though through innovation and invention I think Am. will be able to curb this situation.
